Avalon Middle School teacher accused of asking former student for naked pictures released from jail

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 31-year-old Avalon Middle School arrested and charged after being accused of asking for nude photos from a 16-year-old former student, has been released from the Orange County Jail.

According to an arrest affidavit, Andrew John Montavlo was friends with the girl on the social media app Snapchat until May or June, when she posted a photo of herself in a bikini.”

The teenager told detectives Montalvo asked her for nude photos, which she sent.

The girl, who was 14 when she was in Montavlo’s civics class, told investigators that while she was being held in a juvenile detention center after a burglary and grand theft arrest, she and another girl hatched a plan to blackmail the teacher, the affidavit said.

On Nov. 6, Montalvo met with the girls and gave them $2,000 in cash to keep them from going to police about the photos, deputies said.

During a Dec. 8 interview, Montavlo admitted that he “did make a mistake in communicating with (the victim) and asking for pictures,” the affidavit said. “He offered the excuse of him being intoxicated at the time.”

An examination of his cellphone revealed that Montavlo had a conversation with another man asking him for “backup and for him to bring his piece” when he met the girls with the $2,000, the affidavit said.

“Here’s the skinny – I’m being extorted for (expletive) that went down when I was (expletive) up,” he told the other man, according to the affidavit. “I got messaged and it led to pics being sent, and apparently the chick is underage.”

Deputies reported that they did not believe Montavlo was unaware the girl was a minor, though, because she had been in his class two years earlier.

He was arrested and charged with soliciting a child and unlawful sexual conduct using computer services or devices.

The school principal alerted parents about the arrest.
