HOMOSASSA, Fla. - Sheriff's Office detectives said they added additional charges to a man arrested last week for allegedly smothering his 1-year-old son, Daymeon, to continue playing video games.
Along with a murder charge, Cody Wygant, 24, now faces charges of child neglect and causing great bodily harm to a 3-month-old girl living in the home.
"The death of Daymeon was a horrible tragedy, but it led to the discovery of extreme abuse to the baby girl in the house," said Undersheriff Buddy Grant. "Thankfully, we got to this child when we did. I don't want to think about what would have happened to her without this type of intervention."
Two other people were arrested: Geneva DuFour, 55, and Jessika DuFour, 22, both of Homosassa.
When detectives responded to the home last week, they said they found deplorable conditions. One sergeant at the scene said, "This is the worst roach infestation I have ever seen."
The 3-month-old girl was removed from the home. Authorities said the baby suffered from "flat head syndrome," which can be caused from leaving a baby in a playpen or crib for extended periods of time. She also had a severe yeast infection that covered her body and caused tissue damage, as well as other medical issues, authorities said.
After being released, she was placed in foster care and not with relatives.
