Bear spotted in tree in New Smyrna Beach

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — Several residents in New Smyrna Beach have spotted a bear hanging out in a tree on Saturday.

The bear has been in a tree near Canal Street and Sam Avenue for most of Saturday morning.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officers have been monitoring the situation and said the bear is not threatening anyone. FWC said it has no plans to relocate the bear, which is believed to be a young male.

FWC officials said it's uncommon for bear to show up in New Smyrna Beach, but not unheard of. The bear apparently came to the area at some point overnight.

Officials asked that people leave the bear alone and avoid causing any commotion in the area.
