OPD on Boston bombing, downtown 5K security

ORLANDO, Fla. — Chief Rooney and the Orlando Police Department extend their thoughts and prayers to those in Boston affected by the recent tragic event.

Chief Rooney has been in constant contact with Sheriff Demings, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, other city, state, federal, and local officials.

Public safety is the number one concern. While we have plans in place to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors, The Orlando Police Department is taking appropriate precautionary measures, including additional staffing at events for the comfort of those in attendance.

For security reasons, specific measures cannot be discussed.  In regards to the upcoming Corporate 5K hosted in downtown Orlando, as well as other major events there will be a significant law enforcement and security presence.

We remind you to be alert, and if you see something say something.  We are committed to providing a safe environment and we encourage everyone to please continue attending events and activities as previously planned.
