Boy Scout leader arrested on dozens of child pornography charges, agents say

A Boy Scouts leader with a Lake County troop has been arrested on charges of possessing child pornography, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced Tuesday.
Michael Douglas Hanen, 67, of Umatilla, faces 38 counts of possession of child pornography.
Agents with FLDE began investigating Hanen following a tip and conducted a forensic preview of a digital device and found 38 files of children who appeared to be under the age of 18 in sexual images, investigators said.
According to an arrest report, some of the children in the images were as young as 2 years old.
Hanen was arrested just before 8 a.m., and FDLE Orlando Office Director Danny Banks said investigators moved quickly in the case, just due to its nature.
"When it involves children and their safety, we can't hesitate, we can't wait," Banks said. "We can't not follow through with those tips."
"At the end of every one of those pictures is a child that is a victim," Banks added. "That is our responsibility, to follow up on behalf of that victim and to stop another child from being victimized in the future."
Hanen allegedly told investigators that he has been an active Boy Scout den leader for several decades.
Neighbors describe Hanen as a quiet person who didn't interact with many people.

Officials with FLDE said given the nature of Hanen's arrest and access to children, they want anyone with information about him to call 407-245-0888.

Hanen is being held without bail at the Lake County Jail.
A request for comment from the Boy Scouts of America was not immediately returned.
