Wildfire near Wekiwa Springs makes for smoky conditions in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 40-acre fire burning in the forest near Wekiwa Springs State Park sent smoke into downtown Orlando Saturday morning, according to Orange County Fire Rescue.

Firefighters have been unable to reach the fire, with units at King's Landing and Wekiwa Springs State Park, officials said.

The fire grew quickly, officials said, and firefighters sought to dredge fire lines to prevent fire from spreading.

Officials said some kayakers would have to change plans after they received word of the fire after 7 a.m.

"The Fire Department came up and let us know and we took control of the situation and got everybody taken care of," said Daniel Smith, a manager at King's Landing.

The fire did not threaten any campers or structures.

Smoke from the fire has filtered into downtown Orlando, causing a haze and smoky conditions Saturday.

The Florida Forest said the fire is 90-percent contained.
