Building at Altamonte Springs motel destroyed in fire

Crews were battling a fire early Wednesday at an Altamonte Springs motel.
The fire broke out at an abandoned building at the Remington Inn and Suites on Douglas Avenue near State Road 436 and Interstate 4.
Crews were at the scene shortly before 4 a.m. and smoke and flames could be seen rising from the building.

They were still putting out hot spots at noon.
Witnesses said they say law enforcement knocking on doors trying to get people out of the nearby buildings at the motel.
“The police started knocking on the door. I was scared. My kid was crying,” said Alex Torres. “(We’re) just scared (about) what’s going to happen next.”
Seminole County Fire Rescue officials said the fire involved at least six units and happened at an abandoned building that suffered damage during Hurricane Irma.
"This is a building that was vacant, it was pretty much condemned. We were just keeping it from other buildings," said Lt. Andy Gay of Seminole County Fire Rescue.
Some of the motel residents said they were temporarily living in the motel until the apartments were fixed, but now they will have to find another place to live.
The top floor of the building collapsed as crews put out the blaze.

Gay said there was a report of two fires on the property, one in the back of the building and the other in the front, and that the fires happened a few hours apart.
About 9 p.m., firefighters were called to the third floor of a different building of the motel where they put out a small fire inside one of the rooms.
Part of Douglas Avenue was closed off for several hours, but has since reopened.
No one was injured in either fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
