ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Deputies said car burglaries are getting out of hand in one section of Orange County.

Investigators said thieves are targeting the Dr. Phillips area on Sand Lake Road, known as Sector 3 to Orange County deputies.

They said they are hoping their new plan will cut the number of burglaries and also get the perpetrators off the streets.

Officials said the thefts are a crime or opportunity, occurring very late at night.

Officials said some of the thieves are smashing out windows, and others are targeting victims who have left the cars unlocked.

Deputies said the perpetrators are going after cars from Dr. Phillips to Pine Hills.

To prevent the trend from increasing, the Orange County Sheriff's Office is launching a campaign.

The office is putting out fliers, increasing patrols and putting up signs that urge drivers to lock their cars and to call deputies if they see something suspicious.

People WFTV talked to said they saw the signs and believe the campaign will be effective.

Investigators said anyone with information should call the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
