Charter Communications buying Bright House Networks

STAMFORD, Conn. — Charter Communications Inc. is buying fellow cable operator Bright House Networks LLC in a deal valued at more than $10 billion that will affect many people in central Florida.

Charter is the fourth-largest cable operator in the U.S., while Bright House is the sixth biggest.

Bright House serves thousands of central Florida residents. Some customers told Channel 9 that they're okay with the buyout, as long as service isn't interrupted and their monthly bill stays the same.

"As long as they provide the service that customers want, that's all that matters the most," Jesus Rivera said.

Poll: Is the buyout good news for Bright House customers?

The business will be conducted through a partnership, with Charter owning 73.7 percent and Advance/Newhouse -- the parent company of Bright House -- owning 26.3 percent.

Bright House serves customers in Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan and California.

Eyewitness News did a comparison of cable and Internet service plans for the two companies. Bright House currently offers more than 250 channels and 35 Mbps Internet for $109 per month. Charter's plan costs $89.97 per month for more than 125 channels and 60 Mbps Internet.

The transaction is subject to conditions, including Charter shareholder approval, the expiration of Time Warner Cable's right of first offer for Bright House and the closing of Charter's previously announced deal with Comcast.

WFTV Q&A with Bright House

1)   What is the timeline for the takeover of Bright House?

A: This is going to take a while.  Transactions of this magnitude are complex and require regulatory approval.  First, the Comcast/TWC/Charter transactions must be approved by the government and then must be closed by those companies.  Then, the transaction between BHN and Charter must be approved by the government and finalized by both parties.  We cannot say with absolute certainty. I would contact Charter to get an official quote on estimated time frame if you need to use a time frame in a direct quote.

2)   How many customers does Bright House have in Florida and Orange County?

Bright House Networks remains a private company at this point.  As such, we do not release detailed business related numbers by area.

3) What will change for customers?

No change at this time.  We will continue to offer the best products available and deliver top rate customer care.

4) Will customers have to change hardware? Infrastructure in their homes, businesses?

No, we don't anticipate any changes. Of course, we do offer upgraded equipment as new technology, products and services become available..

5) Will costs change for customers?

Any answer here would be speculative.  We do review pricing annually.

In closing, our leadership has been working very hard to ensure that this is the most positive scenario for our employees, our customers and our company in their discussions with Charter.  We will continue to offer the best products available and deliver top rate customer care.  We think a combination with Charter best achieves those goals.
