FHP: 3rd child dies in Volusia County I-95 crash

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - The only surviving passenger in a crash on I-95 in Volusia County has died, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers.

Michelly Zulfiqar, 38, of South Daytona, and two of her children, Hami Zulfiqar, 10, and Dani Zulfiqar, 3, were killed in a tragic rollover crash on Interstate 95 near LPGA Boulevard on April 19.

The family's 4-year-old son, Sami Zulfiqar, was in critical condition at Arnold Palmer hospital since the crash. Officials said the child died on Saturday, leaving no survivors in the violent rollover crash.

The deaths left the local Muslim community gripped with grief.

"It's hurtful. It's painful, but you put your trust as a Muslim in God," said family friend Linda McGee.

State troopers said Michelly was traveling south on I-95 when she lost control for unknown reasons and veered into the bridge abutment.

According to investigators, no one in the Mercedes van was wearing a seat belt.

"She was well loved, well respected. She was an excellent mother," McGee said.

In 2006, the family's 2-year-old son was killed in a boating accident behind their home.

Friends of Dr. Hassan Zulfiqar, the father, said they are praying that his strength prevails again.

"He is going to be strong for his son. I think he's proven that," McGee said.

State troopers said the crash remains under investigation and it was unclear why Michelly lost control of the van.
