Child confirmed dead from flu in Orange County

ORLANDO, Fla. — Channel 9 has learned a young, school-aged child has died from the flu in Orange County.

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County confirmed the death but did not release the identity of the child.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this child,” said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County Health “All of us should get the flu vaccine and continue to be alert and practice good hygiene measures."

While most cases of flu are mild, there are exceptions, officials said.  Pre-existing health conditions often play a role in how individuals react to the flu.
