Child dies after being found unresponsive in swampy area

GROVELAND, Fla. — A child died Tuesday after Groveland police pulled her out of a swampy area of water, authorities said.

Police said Alexa Escudero was reported missing by a woman who was watching the child and her brother.

The woman said her husband went into the children's room to feed them and put them down for a nap. She said he waited until they fell asleep and went to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

The woman said the victim was not in her her crib and was nowhere to be found when her husband returned to the room. The couple said they searched their house for 45 minutes before calling Lake County deputies.

Deputies and Groveland police responded and searched for the child. Officials said a family friend, who was assisting in the search, found the child lying in a swampy area.

Authorities began CPR on Alexa until emergency medical personnel arrived. Officials said the child's hands were extremely wrinkled and it appeared that she was in the water for some time.

Officials said the child vomited large amounts of water during CPR, but never became responsive. EMS officials said she never regained a pulse.

The child's age was not released.
