Clermont asks for ideas to name new building housing police department

CLERMONT, Fla. — The new home for the Clermont Police Department is coming under fire for its name.

Officials bought the property, off South Highway 27, for $6.3 million because the previous owner, the Celebration of Praise Mega Church, couldn't afford its mortgage.  Since then, officials have referred to it as the Celebration Center, but residents think it needs a new name.

The massive, 69,000-square-foot building was purchased by the city in December.  It will be the new home to the Clermont Police Department, but there are other plans that include a public swimming pool and large auditorium.

City leaders, however, are at a standstill as to what to name the building.

"Well, it's kind of a tricky place to name, and that is why we have invited the public to help us name it because it will have the Police Department there," said spokeswoman Doris Bloodworth.

The city will be accepting names from the public until the end of March. The facilities will be available to the public sometime in June.
