Co-workers of woman killed by stray bullet in Orlando hold fundraiser for funeral

COCOA BEACH, Fla. — Co-workers of the woman killed by a stray bullet in downtown Orlando held a fundraiser to help pay for her funeral.

Maria Godinez worked at Sonny’s BBQ in Cocoa Beach for more than five years.

She was in downtown Orlando last week with friends when a bullet from a police officer’s gun hit her while he was in an altercation with a man who was flashing a gun, which turned out to be unloaded.

Her boss donated 20 percent of the proceeds from the restaurant to her family.

“There are young kids that come and work for me, especially for that long, it’s like we’re raising them. She was like a daughter to us,” said Ronnie Emmons.

The man the officer was aiming for, Kody Roach, was charged with Godinez’s death even though the bullet came from the officer’s gun.
