Coast Guard members rescue injured sea turtle in Longboat Pass

SARASOTA. Fla. — A severely injured sea turtle that spotted with a spear penetrating its shell off the coast of Longboat Pass is safe, thanks to the quick efforts by Coast Guard members.

A good Samaritan notified the Coast Guard when they saw the injured animal.

Officials said the turtle was unable to dive under the surface because of air leaking into the shell.

When rescuers arrived at the scene, they were able to safely capture the turtle, and bring it to the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota.

Officials at the aquarium will examine the turtle to determine the extent of its injuries.
