Cold case: Deputies seek trio in connection with 2011 shooting that left sailor dead

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Orange County Sheriff's Office held a news conference Friday to try to generate new leads in the 2011 shooting death of a 22-year-old U.S. Navy sailor.

The renewed focus on the unsolved case comes after the victim's father, Roberto Guzman, contributed some of his own retirement funds toward the Crimeline reward, which is now $10,000.

"I don't know how you can look in the eyes of your children, if you have any," Guzman said. "I don't know how you can enjoy Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother's Day (or) Father's Day knowing what you've done."

Deputies said Jeffrey Guzman-Perez was fatally shot on Nov. 5, 2011, on Rivo Alto Avenue in the Pine Castle neighborhood while he dropped off his girlfriend after a motorcycle ride.

Investigators said a dark blue minivan approached Guzman-Perez and two men wearing dark clothing got out of the vehicle.

Detectives described the pair as a black man, 6 feet tall, with dreadlocks, and a masked Hispanic man. There was no description given of the driver.

The trio fled the scene after the shooting, deputies said.

"You should assume responsibility and come forward and turn yourself in," Guzman said. "That is the least you can do."

The family said an arrest would be an answer to its prayers.

"He was a friend of many. He was a cousin. He was a nephew. He was a brother. He was a grandson. And he was a son," Guzman said. "We really hope that someone is strong enough to come forward and share with the Sheriff's Office what they know."

The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
