Community outraged over class prank sign at Lake Howell High School

WINTER PARK, Fla. — A high school prank sparked outrage in a Winter Park community.

A sign that said "Nigga we made it", that some students and parents found offensive, was hung from the Lake Howell High School’s building early Thursday morning as part of a senior class prank.

The words that were written on the sign are lyrics to a rap song.

“It is racist. I mean, you just don’t say things like that,” said parent Karen Robertson.

Students said the prank is part of a nationwide trend and seniors at Lake Howell were mimicking that prank.

“The school did identify the individuals responsible. They have since talked to those individuals and they will be handled appropriately,” said Michael Lawrence with Seminole County Public Schools. “They’re looking forward to graduating, we understand that. But, we don’t want them to do anything disruptive to the school.”

A picture with the same rap lyrics was posted on a banner outside a high school in Atlanta.

“It is setting a bad example for our school, for the seniors leaving. I just don’t think that is right,” said student Hugo Groenendyk.

School officials would not say whether or not the students responsible for hanging the sign would be eligible to graduate.

Officials only said the students have received appropriate disciplinary consequences for their actions.
