Officials: Robbery victim grabbed gun from culprit; Man arrested after standoff

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A man was arrested after he barricaded himself inside an Econo Lodge motel room on International Drive following a robbery, according to authorities.

Detectives said they arrested Debonaire Brooks, 17, and charged him with armed robbery with a firearm.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Brooks walked up to a couple in a car on International Drive and tried to rob them. However, deputies said the passenger grabbed the gun from Brooks.

Deputies said that was when Brooks ran away, and the passenger fired shots at him.

The motel manager told officers that he saw Brooks run into one of the rooms.

Visitor Tim Brown woke up four doors down from the motel room deputies were focused on.

"So many guns, assault rifles everywhere, marksman," said Brown.

Officers said a SWAT team was calling out to Brooks and putting pressure on the door, but no one came out for a long time.

"[I] Kept hearing the cops saying, 'Come out with your hands up, come out with your hands up. We won't hurt you if you come out with your hands up,'" said Brown.

Authorities said someone inside opened the door. Investigators said they found seven people inside the room. Many of them were teenagers from Polk County.

Deputies said they were not sure why the group was there, but one of them reserved the room.

"With them not coming out, that could be charges, but we're still looking at that in this investigation," said Jeff Williamson of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Officers said Brooks was among the group and fit the description of the robber. They said after the seven were detained and questioned, Brooks was arrested.

No injuries were reported.
