Could harmful algae be behind recent manatee deaths in Indiana River Lagoon?

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - Scientists are trying to figure out what has killed at least 80 manatees in the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County.

Researchers believe the deaths could be connected to back to back blooms of harmful algae that has turned the river brown.

The blooms have wiped out 31,000 acres of sea grass over the last two years.

Manatees eat sea grass, but with the grass gone, they may have turned to less-healthy options, authorities said.
