Two adults, child dead after Polk County crash

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A two-vehicle crash has left three family members dead and two children in critical condition Tuesday.

According to investigators with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a car driven by Justin Sims, 31 of Dade City was traveling west on Deen Still Road and ran a stop sign at State Road 33, striking a semitrailer.

Investigators said the car was dragged approximately 400 feet by the semitrailer.

Sims, his wife Sharonda, 28, and their 5-year-old son Savion were killed in the crash.

Two of their daughters, 7-year-old Ariel and 2-year-old Kitty were airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in critical condition.

Their 3-month-old daughter Arienne was taken by ambulance to Lake Regional Medical Center but did not appear to have injuries.

According to sheriff's investigators, the family was returning from a shopping trip to Orlando when the crash occurred.

Investigators said the baby was properly restrained in her child car seat, but no one else in the car was wearing a seat belt.

According to investigators, Sims had a suspended driver's license for failure to pay traffic fines.

The driver of the semitrailer was not injured. No charges are pending in the accident, according to investigators.
