Davenport condo units evacuated because of possible sinkhole

DAVENPORT, Fla. — Residents of a Davenport condominium complex were evacuated Friday because of a possible sinkhole, Osceola County Fire Rescue said.

The complex is located on Calypso Court near the Four Corners area about nine miles from Walt Disney World.

Sixteen units were closed off after the hole opened up under the building.

“The hole is by my apartment. I went on my patio and I saw the hole,” said resident Mitzy Pimentel.

Pimentel said she and other residents heard strange noises overnight, but didn't think much of it.

“We were thinking it was just neighbors slamming doors and throwing stuff around the property,” said resident Idaliz Pimentel.

The couple said they received a call at work that they needed to go home and then evacuate.

“We're like, ‘What?’ They're like, ‘There's a sinkhole,’” said Idaliz Pimentel.

Osceola County officials estimate the hole is about 30 feet across and 20 feet deep.

Officials said the hole was already starting to compromise the foundation and that's why they had to get everyone out.

Since it's private property, it will be up to the owners to have a civil engineer assess the situation to determine if it is officially a sinkhole.

Residents said they had to leave most of their belongings behind.

“They closed it out, and we couldn't go back in at all to get anything else,” said Mitzy Pimentel.

The residents we spoke with are staying in hotels on their own dime.

They are waiting to hear back from the property manager on when they'll be able to return.
