Deadline approaching for Common Core input

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The deadline for Florida citizens to comment on the Common Core academic standards for language arts and math is approaching.

The Florida Department of Education has received nearly 13,000 comments and suggestions so far. The final date to submit is Thursday.

Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order earlier this year also instructing the department to hold three public meetings on the standards. The state Board of Education will review the comments at their meeting on Nov. 19 in Gainesville.

The standards set grade-by-grade expectations on what a student should know. They have been adopted by 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Anyone who would like to comment on the standards can do so online at www.flstandards.org or via email to flstandards(at)fldoe.org.
