LAKELAND, Fla. - Two toddlers have died after falling into a pool in Polk County Friday evening.
Deputies said the children, who are cousins, were found face down in a pool at their grandparent’s home on Morning Dove Circle in Lakeland.
The toddlers, 18-month old Silas Lugo-Walsh and 2-year-old Jayvien Watkins, were pronounced deceased at the hospital over the weekend.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the boys wandered away from the house before falling into the swimming pool. Judd said the incident appeared to be a tragic accident.
According to investigators, the father of one of the children was upstairs sleeping and his wife was downstairs. They eventually realized the toddlers were missing and found them in the pool.
“This is a nightmare of monumental proportions. I can’t stress how emotional it is for everyone that sees these beautiful, young babies in such distress,” Judd said.
Deputies said the pool was gated, but the latch wasn’t working. The investigation remains ongoing and autopsies will be done on the victims.
