Deputies: Couple called racial slur, threatened with gun in road-rage incident

A Port St. John couple and their children were called a racial slur and threatened with a gun as they left a grocery store this weekend, in what deputies are calling a road-rage incident.

Kevin Pollock and Crystal Connors said the incident started near Fay Boulevard and U.S. 1 as they passed a slow-moving vehicle in the passing lane.

The vehicle had just exited the same plaza where she and her husband were grocery shopping.

“I asked him, ‘Are you flicking me off?’ And he said, ‘Yes, because you’re nothing but a (expletive) loving (expletive),” said Connors.

As her husband, who is black, started to respond, Connors said the passenger in the vehicle retrieved a weapon.

“The passenger pulled his gun, cocked it back and pointed it directly at my face. My stepson then took a can of soda and threw it at him in order to distract him, so we could speed off and get away,” Connors said.

There were five children in the car with the couple, including a teenager Pollock coaches in football.

“My kids were in that car. They didn’t need to see that. These guys chased us,” said Pollock.

The couple said the chase didn’t end until deputies arrived.

Jason Mack, 33, was arrested.

He’s charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Pollock and Connors believe the case should be pursued as a hate crime.

“This is not something my children will soon forget and it’s not something our community should put up with,” Pollock said.
