Deputies: Homeless man carrying $2,700 arrested for stealing sardines

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Marion County deputies said they arrested a man who was stealing two cans of sardines from an Ocala-area grocery store Tuesday.

According to deputies, Robert Mitchell told them he was homeless and living in a nearby camp.

Deputies said Mitchell told them he had $2,700 and a food stamp card with available funds on it.

According to deputies, when Mitchell was told he was being arrested he handed them a large amount of cash and a gallon-size freezer bag filled with marijuana.

Deputies said the sardines Mitchell was accused of taking were valued at $1.98.

Mitchell was booked into the Marion County jail on charges of petit retail theft and drug possession.
