Deputies: Mother jailed, 4 daughters face charges after family beats up boy in Deltona

DELTONA, Fla. — A Volusia County mother and her four daughters are accused of beating up a 13-year-old student, who suffered a concussion as a result, authorities said.

"An injustice was done, because there was so many people beating on him," the victim’s grandmother, who did not want to be identified, said.

The victim's grandmother told Channel 9’s Mike Springer that her grandson barely managed to escape the attack that occurred last week while he rode his bicycle.

Shawnte Jones faced a judge Wednesday. Springer was at the courthouse and learned that Jones was on probation on theft charges when the confrontation happened.

The victim's grandmother thanked the people who broke up the fight, saving her grandson's life.

This Deltona grandmother said her grandson is slowly recovering.

“His spirits are OK. He's still kind of shaken,” said his grandmother.

Deputies said they arrested Jones, and they plan to file charges against her four daughters, ages 11, 13, 15 and 17, for their roles in the attack that happened Friday afternoon.

The 13-year-old boy was riding his bike along the sidewalk when deputies said two of the girls stood in his pathway, blocking him and that's when deputies said an argument ensued.

Deputies said the girls began to punch the boy, but he did not fight back.

Neighbors pulled the girls off of the boy, and told them to call their mother to pick them up, investigators said.

Deputies said when Jones arrived with her two older daughters, the whole family started punching and kicking the boy while he was lying on the ground, before neighbors broke it up again and the family drove away.

Deputies later arrested Jones.

Jones is being held at the Volusia County Jail without bail on child abuse and battery charges.
