Deputies: Ormond Beach couple left child alone with drugs

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — A two-hour trip to Walmart cost an Ormond Beach couple their daughter.

Investigators said the couple left their 18-month-old daughter home alone for two hours with drug paraphernalia lying around Tuesday.

According to reports, Volusia County deputies had to break into the home of 19-year-old Chyanne Messer and 24-year-old Daniel Voisard to get to the child who was locked inside a room.

"They just drove away on their bike, and that kid's inside that house by themselves," said a neighbor over the phone to a non-emergency line.

Nearly two hours later, the couple came home.

"I noticed the mother and father coming up on the motorcycle and had two plastic containers on the side, you know, I guess they went to Walmart," neighbor John David said.

The Department of Children and Families took the child into protective custody, not only for being left alone but because there was also marijuana right within the child's reach.

"They could be choking to death and you don't even know it within five minutes," David said.

Voisard said nothing when he went in front of a judge Wednesday morning and was told he can't have contact with his daughter.

Neighbors told deputies the child is left home alone on a regular basis.

"The other night I know that kid was there by himself two and a half hours while they went and watched fireworks," said a neighbor over the phone to a non-emergency line.

David said he's heard the baby crying in the home before, but never realized the child could have been in trouble and alone.

"There's no excuse period, no excuse," David said.

Neighbors said, and DCF confirmed, that the little girl is in the care of a family member Wednesday.
