POLK COUNTY, Fla. - Christopher Finlayson, 24, of Winter Haven is in jail on child abuse charges after deputies said he threw an 11-month-old baby across a room, severely injuring the child.
According to Polk County Sheriff's deputies the baby suffered a skull fracture, two broken wrists and five fractured ribs in the Thursday night incident.
Investigators said the child's mother left the baby in the care of Finlayson while she went to the store. When the mother returned home around 7 p.m. the baby was unresponsive.
According to investigators, Finlayson told the mother that the baby hit its head on the playpen. The mother took the child to Winter Haven Hospital. Doctors at the hospital contacted the sheriff's office.
Investigators said Finlayson, who told them he had smoked marijuana on Wednesday and remained up all night, said he "lost it" and in a moment of rage threw the baby across the room when he couldn't stop the baby's crying.
The baby was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa and is reported to be in stable condition, according to investigators.
Finlayson has a previous arrest record, which includes a battery charge, investigators said.
Finlayson is charged with aggravated child abuse. He was booked into the Polk County Jail Friday on a no-bond status.
