Deputy shoots burglar near College Park; lockdowns lifted at 5 schools, officials say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old man was shot Thursday morning while trying to flee a home he burglarized near Orlando's College Park neighborhood, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

A homeowner reported shortly after 11 a.m. that a burglary was underway at a home on Beatrice Drive in the Kingwood subdivision, Orange County Capt. Angelo Nieves said.

Two deputies found at least two burglars in the home, one of whom fled on foot, the other of whom got into a car, Nieves said.

The deputies ordered the man to get out of the vehicle, but he sped toward them, officials said.

Investigators said a corporal, who has been employed by the Sheriff's Office for 10 years, shot the man in the car, who drove off.

When deputies found the vehicle at Edgewater Drive and Yates Street, one man fled on foot and the wounded man, later identified as Myron Evans, 18, was arrested and taken to a hospital, Nieves said.

Investigators said one of the burglars remains at large. Nieves said the vehicle was stolen from Belle Isle.

Edgewater High School, College Park Middle School and Princeton, Lake Silver and Lake Weston elementary schools were placed on lockdown, but the lockdowns were lifted.

No other details were given.
