WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A Polk County deputy, who taught a CPR class on his scheduled day off, performed CPR on a woman at a restaurant a short while later, saving her life.

Deputy David Langston, who is a certified CPR instructor, agreed to teach a CPR class before he met with his wife for lunch at a Winter Haven restaurant.

After the couple had eaten and were preparing to leave, a man ran up to the deputy and asked if he could help his mother, who was choking. Langston performed the Heimlich maneuver on the woman for several minutes before she passed out. He continued to assist her and she began breathing and coughed up her sandwich, according to a Facebook post by the deputy's wife.

She said her husband helped the woman calm down and stayed with her until emergency medical services arrived.

"He's a hero and I'm so proud," Malia Langston said in her Facebook post.

Langston was awarded the Lifesaving Medal by the Polk County Sheriff's Office last May after he performed CPR on a citizen.
