Disney announces new attractions coming Memorial Day Weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. — Channel 9 got a first look at the newest attractions coming to Disney and found out about some expected delays.

Disney announced Friday what it called an incredible lineup, with new attractions and experiences set to open on Memorial Day Weekend.

For the first time in its 18-year history, Animal Kingdom will be open at night. The park will stay open as late as 11 p.m. beginning May 27 and will include an animated Tree of Life.

"As it moves from day to night, it will change like the lives of animals, like the world of nature, and you're going to want to see that," Joe Rohde, portfolio creative executive, said.

A Star Wars-themed show, called "Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular," is set it open on June 17 at Disney's Hollywood Studios. It will feature fireworks, lasers and special effects.

Also set for a June 17 opening is the new "Soaring Around the World" ride at Epcot.

June 21 will see the opening for new "Frozen" attractions at Epcot, including a boat ride during which characters from the movie will greet guests. Characters from the movie will also be at the Royal Sommerhus, which is modeled after a traditional Norwegian cabin.

"Our team actually had the ability to travel to Norway to really research the locations that have really inspired this entire area," said Lauren Niederhiser, assistant project manager.

A new attraction at Animal Kingdom called "Rivers of Light" is facing delays and no opening date has been set.
