Disruptive special needs student shot with Taser at Spruce Creek High School

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A 16-year-old special needs student at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange was shot with a Taser after school officers said he became disruptive on Friday.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Beth Fortin, an eight-year veteran of the force, had no choice because the boy was about to attack an assistant principal and wouldn't follow commands to stop.

"The teacher came in and told us that a student had been (shot with a Taser)," said student Elijah Collmar.

The teen who was shot with Taser now faces felony battery charges, authorities said.

Collmar told Channel 9 the whole mess is unusual for this school year.

"We haven't had that many hiccups in a pretty long time," he said. "A little excessive I suppose on the part of the Taser. I don't really think it's necessary to (use a Taser on) a student at a school."
