Driver accused of DUI crashes into pond following police pursuit

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A driver could face DUI charges after he was chased down by police late Sunday night, authorities said.

Officers said they spotted Clarence Miller speeding down the middle of University Boulevard without his headlights on around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they suspected he was under the influence and tried to pull him over, but Miller would not stop.

Officers said they pursued him to Dairy Road, where Miller lost control, sideswiped a utility trailer, and then crashed into a retention ditch.

"As the stop sticks activated, or were in use properly, the vehicle actually slid sideways, hit the curb and launched into this side retention area," said Cheryl Trainer of the Melbourne Police Department. "There were some interesting things that came out of that vehicle. There are some beer bottles, consistent with the fact that we were following the vehicle for DUI, and a handgun as well."

Miller was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
