Earthquake strikes 100 miles off Daytona Beach Shores

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. — A magnitude-3.7 earthquake struck Saturday afternoon off the Northeast Florida coast.

The earthquake struck more than 100 miles off the coast of Daytona Beach Shores.

It happened around 4 p.m. at a depth of 3 miles below the ocean floor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The minor quake wasn’t felt on land.

Though rare, Florida has experienced about two dozen seismic events, the Florida Geological Survey said.

In 2006, a magnitude-6 earthquake struck beneath the Gulf of Mexico, the effects of which were reportedly felt in Sarasota and Gainesville.

The risk for tsunamis striking Florida’s coastline is relatively low because major earthquakes aren’t common in the region.

According to the FGS, Florida is situated on the trailing of the North American Plate.

Quakes happen more frequently in the Caribbean because it sits on plate boundaries.
