Edgewater mom arrested after toddler found wandering

EDGEWATER, Fla. — Police said a 2-year-old boy was found wandering along U.S. 1 in Edgewater Tuesday morning and the boy's mother has been arrested.

The mother, 27-year-old Brianna Cable, was charged with child neglect and booked into the Volusia County Jail.

The child could have been seriously injured or killed if it wasn't for a good Samaritan who called 911, police said.

"There's a little boy in a diaper walking out here on U.S. 1 here in Edgewater. I'm afraid he's going to get run over," said the good Samaritan, Brian Foster.

According to police, Foster was able to get the toddler to walk away from the roadway and the boy led him to a nearby apartment.

"I've got him off the road now and he went back up into the room, but I beat on the door and no parents or nobody is coming out," said Foster.

Police said officers showed up and found Cable inside the apartment. She claimed to have fallen asleep but appeared to be under the influence and had slow, mumbled speech, according to investigators.

Officers said they also discovered Cable's apartment was in deplorable conditions.

"There was a smell of animal feces and urine. There were individuals passed out in various stages of under the influence of alcohol," said Sgt. Matthew Snyder with Edgewater police.

Cable is being held at the jail on a $1,000 bond.
