Elderly man crashes Cadillac into Merritt Island home

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — A Merritt Island homeowner is facing some major repairs after a car crashed through her house Thursday afternoon.

The crash left a gaping hole in part of the Riverside home, and the homeowner said the driver took out her entire bathroom.

"This is not a good trick or treat, OK?" said homeowner Cathie Dunaj.

Shortly after noon on Thursday, Dunaj had the unexpected visitor come through her home.

"The last thing I expected was to come home and find a car in my house," said Dunaj.

The Florida Highway Patrol told Eyewitness News that the driver, John Zimmer, had some sort of medical problem before he crashed into the house.

The 82-year-old man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

FHP said no one in the home was injured.

However, Dunaj said it could have been far worse.

"The toilet is gone, everything is gone. If someone was sitting on the bowl, they wouldn't be here right now," said Dunaj.

Now, she said she has a lot of cleaning up to do.

"My whole bathroom is destroyed. My bedroom is flooded, and I don't know what to think, to tell you the truth," said Dunaj.

At this point, FHP said the driver has not been charged, but the investigation is ongoing.
