Elderly woman killed in Melbourne house fire

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The state fire marshal is investigating a fire that killed an 81-year-old woman in Melbourne.

Marjorie Driggers was found dead after a blaze tore through her Buick Avenue home about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Driggers' family spent Monday securing her home of nearly 20 years. Off camera, they told Channel 9 they're still coming to terms with her loss, but shared some photos from happier times.

"My husband said he was going to take the dog for a walk, came out, the smoke was coming out the house so he grabbed a shovel and tried to break down a window," said neighbor Natasha Love. "It was in flames."

Love said at the time, her husband had no idea Driggers was still inside. She said she called for help and within minutes, two-dozen firefighters and two fire chiefs worked to beat back the flames.

Crews have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.

Driggers, who moved to Brevard County in 1962, is originally from Ohio.
