LAKE COUNTY, Fla. - A woman is dead and her son is critical after the ATV they were riding was hit by a truck in Lake County Saturday night, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
Troopers said 43-year-old Melissa Cole was a passenger on the ATV driven by her son, 21-year-old Dillon Ash.
The two were heading westbound on the shoulder of County Road 44A just before 9:30 p.m. when they attempted to cross the road and traveled into the path of a pickup truck headed in the opposite direction.
The 16-year-old driver of the pickup truck was unable to stop and hit the ATV head on, according to FHP.
The woman on the ATV died at the scene. Her son was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center and is in critical condition.
The crash is still under investigation.
