Experts remind Central Floridians to drain standing water

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — While many around Central Florida have been occupied with storm cleanup around their homes after Hurricane Matthew, experts remind us to also drain any standing water that could be attracting mosquitoes.

In Seminole County, Alex Short has received nonstop service calls for his mosquito removal business, Mosquito Joe’s.

“The storm brings water. That brings mosquitoes and they want to get rid of them,” Short said.

Using a natural system that only harms mosquitoes, mosquito technicians pre-treat known areas of pooling so when rains come, the treatment spreads.

“It's more water where you're not used to seeing water, we've got to go in and find that,” Short said.

Experts say one mosquito can lay as many as 300 eggs in a container as small as the cap of a water bottle.
