Fatal accident closes busy Leesburg road for hours

LEESBURG, Fla. — A fatal accident shut down a busy Leesburg road for several hours Wednesday.

Leesburg police said Harold Johnston, 71, was driving on Rambo Street around 10:15 a.m. when he pulled his 1997 Buick into the path of a 1998 Saturn traveling on State Road 44.

The driver of the Saturn, Miranda Atkins, 20, slammed into Johnston's car. Johnston was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Atkins was transported by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando and a female toddler in her car was flown to Arnold Palmer's Children's Hospital in Orlando. Their conditions were not released, but police said they appear to be non-life-threatening.

State Road 44, Dixie Avenue, was shut down for three hours while investigators worked at the scene.

The Leesburg Police Department is investigating the accident.
