Pickup truck vaults over guardrail, lands on top of SUV killing 2

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A stretch of Interstate 4 in Volusia County reopened early Friday morning, following a fatal crash that had shut down the road for more than seven hours.

The crash had shut down all eastbound lanes near Orange Camp Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a pickup truck flipped over a guardrail and onto an SUV that was travelling in the opposite direction.

FHP said the driver of the pickup truck, Timothy Engels, 44 of DeBary, was travelling in the westbound lanes of I-4 when he made an abrupt lane change and lost control. Troopers said the pickup truck travelled into the median, and then vaulted over the center guardrail and landed on top of the SUV in the eastbound lanes.

The couple in the SUV, Phil Rutkowski, 66, and Judith Rutowski, 69, of Smithville, Missouri, was killed.

Charges are pending against Engles, FHP said.

The crash remains under investigation.
