Wrong-way driver causes multivehicle crash on Beachline

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A fiery crash on the Beachline (SR-528) caused heavy delays on the roadway Thursday near mile marker 42 in Brevard County, authorities said.

Officials said a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes and caused a crash, just east of I-95.

Carol Hubener, 77, of Merritt Island crashed into another driver's vehicle while going the wrong way down the busy road, officials said.

That crash pushed a car into another vehicle that left a charred patch of grass on the side of the road.

Hubener somehow turned her vehicle around to the right direction and she was pulled over several miles later.

"We spotted her because her SUV had damage on all four corners of the vehicle. It took us awhile to catch up to her, but eventually we caught up to her," said Lt. Channing Taylor of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators said Hubener was confused and she got lost.

"I think it could've been a lot worse. I'm sure all the drivers she was coming at head-on were very scared as well we got a lot of calls about that," said Channing.

Officers said two people had minor injuries.

FHP said Hubener is no longer allowed to drive and will likely face charges for leaving the scene of a crash.
