TAMPA, Fla. - Jury selection has begun in the trial of a Tampa mother accused of killing her two teenagers.
The trial of 53-year-old Julie Schenecker began Monday.
She's charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Prosecutors aren't seeking the death penalty.
According to Tampa Police, Schenecker shot her son twice in the head in the family car "for talking back." The report says Schenecker then shot her daughter in the face at their upscale home.
Court documents show that Schenecker suffered from mental illness for several decades. Her attorneys plan to use an insanity defense.
If convicted, Schenecker could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. If Schenecker is found not guilty by reason of insanity, the judge could still order her committed to a mental hospital until it is determined she is no longer a danger to others or herself.
