Girl, 7, names Brevard Sheriff's Office new K-9 'Koda'

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Brevard County Sheriff's Office's newest K-9 officer is officially on duty Wednesday.

Koda is the newest member of the team, and was officially sworn in by Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

"I think it's only fitting that we swear in our member of our K-9. So with the help of his new handler, I'm going to swear him in. Can you raise your right paw for me? (Laughter)," said Ivey.

Koda's name was selected by deputies from more than 5,000 suggestions on Facebook.

The name was submitted by 7-year-old Grace Stiffler, and means "friend" in the Native-American Sioux language.
