Grieving widow of slain CrossFit instructor opens up about life after loss

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County woman hopes someone can help identify the person who gunned down her husband in the middle of a CrossFit workout two years ago in Winter Garden.

Karen Millsap said she doesn’t have any words for the person who shot and killed her husband as he taught a fitness class, but she said the gunman took away everything from her.

"He took away the certainty you have in the future when you marry someone," Millsap said.

In 2013, a gunman walked past eight people who were working out at CrossFit Mosaic and killed the owner, 33-year-old Richard Millsap, police said.

Winter Garden police said they're still working leads in the case but they would not go into detail.

"If I focus so much on the fact they haven't caught this person, it takes me to a place where I wouldn't be healthy enough to take care of my son," Karen Millsap said.

After her husband's death, Millsap said going to work was a struggle.

"I think the hardest part of transition wasn't initially, it was after a little bit of time when I was feeling pain and everybody was expecting you to be OK," she said.

Recently, Millsap launched Widows At Work, helping people transition back into the workplace after a loss. Her company partners with employers and provides them training on how to manage employees who lose spouses.

"I can tell you that you never stop grieving," she said. "What happens is grief changes its shape in your life."

Millsap said she's managing to get by and her focus is now on her 4-year-old son.

"He knows Dad is with God in heaven; he talks to him all the time," she said. "We watch videos of him."
