Homeowner shoots, kills woman who allegedly kicked in front door

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Authorities say a woman who apparently kicked in the door of a north Florida home died after the homeowner shot her.

Investigators say 26-year-old Latreese Monroe died Wednesday at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office says 64-year-old Joseph McGuire called 911 around 2 a.m. Wednesday. He told dispatchers that someone had arrived at his house and kicked the door in.

The Gainesville Sun reports deputies arrived within three minutes and found Monroe. She had been shot once in the torso. Deputies rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital.

McGuire is cooperating with authorities. So far, no charges have been filed.

State Attorney Bill Cervone says he will review the information turned over by the sheriff's office.
