Insurance fraud investigation lands Orange Co. deputy in jail

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County deputy is in jail following a state investigation.

Waleed Albakri was hauled to jail, by his own colleagues Friday, and taken off the job.

According to state investigators, Albakri made fake insurance claims and made off with thousands of dollars.

The deputy was arrested after a year-long Florida Division of Insurance Fraud investigation that stemmed from a situation last September.

Investigators said the deputy reported electronics, watches and jewelry were stolen from his home.

The said he made a claim under his renter's insurance and got nearly $6,000.

According to investigators he even provided photographs, and documents.

Albakri is assigned to the narcotics division of the Orange County Sheriff's Department and has been a deputy in Orange County for four years.

Albakri has been in the news before. He was most recently presented with medal for trying to save a family, and earlier was in the news when he was run over by a man while he was a deputy in Volusia County.
