Judge calls mother who passed out on bench and left child in rain "lousy parent"

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County judge didn’t hold back when a mother accused of child neglect faced him in court.

“You’re what we classify as a lousy parent,” said Orange County Judge Jerry Brewer to 34-year-old Mindy Eiland.

Eiland was in court for the first time since she was arrested Thursday.

According to deputies, Eiland was found just before 10 p.m. passed out at a bus stop on Orange Blossom Trail near Pope Road with Oslvaldo Sanchez.

Beside them was Eiland’s 20-month-old child, unsecured in a stroller, and in the pouring rain, according to deputies.

The child was inches away from traffic traveling well over 55-miles-per-hour.

Deputies said the child was also in a soiled diaper and covered in sores.

“I said, ‘This is irresponsible.’ The baby is unsafe and on the street, and I immediately called 911,” said a witness, who did not want to be identified.

The man said it wasn’t the first time he had seen the two, as he described, on drugs and with that child.

“All I am looking for is for that baby to be safe,” he said.

When the judge told Eiland she said it wasn’t true.

“Yeah, passed out on a bench with your kid,” Judge Brewer said.

“I took a drug test and I am not on drugs,” Eiland said.

As both Eiland and Sanchez were charged with child neglect, Judge Brewer left the mother by saying, “She is what you would call parent of the year.”

The child is being cared for by Eiland’s mother. The Department of Children and Families has been notified and is currently investigating the child’s well-being.

Eiland is being held on a $1,000 bond.
