Deputies: Human skull found in Brevard Co. river

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office said a human skull was found by two teenagers who were spearfishing in the Banana River Saturday night.

The partial human skull was found in the water, not far from Sunny Lane in Cocoa Beach, according to officials. The sheriff's office dive team was called in to search a portion of the river for any other possible human remains.

"Mom wakes me up in the morning and she's like, 'Hey, there's a whole bunch of police outside. They found a human skull.' And I was like, 'A human skull?' Yeah, it was actually pretty crazy," said witness Daniel Lewis.

Deputies said two teenagers contacted law enforcement after they discovered the skull Saturday night. The teens were spearfishing in shallow water when they aimed for a crab, but instead came up with the skull, officials said.

The partial human skull has been taken to the medical examiner’s office for further investigation. Officials said no other human remains were found during the search of the river.
