KISSIMMEE, Fla. —

An Osceola County mother was arrested on child neglect charges after her son told deputies he could not remember the last time he had a bath.

On Tuesday, deputies responded to Ventura Elementary School because a teacher was concerned about the 10-year-old student.

Deputies spoke to the boy, who told them he did not have clean clothes to wear and could not remember the last time he bathed.

Deputies contacted the boy’s mother, Betsy Velasquez, who allowed them to look inside her home where she and her five children live.

Deputies said the home was in deplorable conditions, with dog feces covering most of the floors, moldy dog food and dirty clothes scattered about the house.

They also found three dogs that appeared to be malnourished.

The Department of Children and Families took custody of the children and placed them with relatives.

Animal Control officials were able to take the dogs.

Velasquez was arrested and charged with child neglect and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
